James A Barnard was the son of Jonathan Hawkins Barnard (1760–1835) and Obedience Bridget Barnett (1768–1849).

On 01 Jan 1826, James wed in Grainger County, Tennessee, to Margaret "Peggy" Bull; she was the daughter of George Bull and second wife, Mary Baker. Peggy died before Sep 1840, but the known Barnard offspring from this marriage were:
- Barthena Barnard (1826)
- Maryann Barnard (1829)
- Miley Sarah Barnard (1832)
- Martha Barnard (1833)
- George A Barnard (1838)

On 19 Oct 1840, James married again, to Margaret Adeline Condry, at Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee. The family moved to Missouri in the 1850s, settling near Quail, in Pierce Township of Stone County. Margaret died before the 1860 census, but they had these known children:
- Samuel Barnard (1841)
- Emeline Biddy Barnard (1845)
- James Barnard (1847)
- Sterling Jefferson Barnard (1852)

On 23 Oct 1860, James wed Margaret Bowman in Stone County, MO. No children were born of this marriage.
"Settlers in Spring Creek Valley, as elsewhere, hated having their plans disrupted when they were so busy providing for their families. Nevertheless, (civil) war clouds rolled up black as midnight. Households were divided with brother fighting against brother, father against son; why no one could tell. Most of the men in the Valley were doing something for the cause they believed to be right. It was in the summer of 1863, as James Barnard and John Sanders sat on a log talking, on the Sanders farm, that some person or persons killed them both, almost at the same time. It was never known who fired the shots. Both were buried in the corner of the field so recently given by James Barnard for a burial place for the refugee children. His grave is not marked, but the grave of John Sanders bears the date: July 28, 1863. Barnard was said to have been buried in front of Sanders..." James A Barnard was the original owner of the land that contained the Short Cemetery. When he passed, the land was purchased by John Short, hence the name of the Cemetery now.
