Susan Victoria Wolverton, well known resident of near Cooter, Mo., died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.C. Clark, Friday night, April 24, 1936. Death was caused from complications resulting from cancer. Deceased was 64 years, 2 months and 28 days of age, was born at Dawson Springs, Ky., the daughter of William Lafayette and Rebecca Clayton.
She was well known in Southeast Missouri, where she spent the greater portion of her life except for a few years in Idaho, Washington and California.
She was local news reporter for various newspapers in the county, serving in this capacity for many years, writing under the name of "Rambling Sam". During her sojourn in California she wrote a number of articles describing scenery and other things of interest in that state. These articles were widely read and highly commended for their descriptive quality.
She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and an active worker in Sunday School. Although a semi-invalid, for the past five or six years, she always lent a helping hand when possible and will be sadly missed by everyone. Evidence of the high esteem in which she was held was the immense gathering of friends and neighbors for her funeral.
Survivors are two sons, Cecil Jenkins of Los Angeles, Calif., William Jenkins of Cooter, Mo.; four daughters, Mrs. Orange Cook of Gibbs, Idaho, Mrs. W.C. Clark of Cooter, Mo., Mrs. R.C. Hawkins of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Landon Hamilton of Cooter; 24 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Clayton of Dawson Springs, Ky., and Thomas Clayton of Princeton, Ky; and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Holman of Dawson Springs.
The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. Clark, Rev. J.B. Copeland of Cooter officiating. ....
Interment was in No. Eight cemetery.
