Mayme L. Hamlett, 94, of Ironton, Mo., died Sunday, October 15, 2000 at The Baptist Home in Ironton.
Born September 8, 1906 in Cooter, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Jozetta Ayers Hamlett. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mable Hamlett and one brother, Floyd Hamlett.
Miss Hamlett was a student at the University of Chicago, Baylor University, and was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. She taught school in the Holland Grade School, Granby High School and West Plains High School. The bulk of her teaching career was spent at
Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Mo.; Union University in Jackson, Tenn.; Missouri Baptist College in St. Louis, Mo.; and Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Mo. She taught courses in English and Latin.
She retired after teaching 48 years but she continued to write and paint. During retirement she wrote the history of Southwest Baptist University, which was published in 1983. At that time, Southwest conferred upon her an honorary Doctor's Degree.
Miss Hamlett had been a resident of The Baptist Home for nine years.
She was a member of the Holly Grove Baptist Church in Cooter, past president of the Delta Kappa Gamma and active in NEA, NCTE, AAUW, and BUS-PROFWC.
She leaves one niece, Edna Jo Hamlett Ross, of Blytheville, Ark., two nephews, Edward H. Hamlett of Houston, Texas and Stephen Dale Hamlett of California.
Graveside services for Miss Hamlett were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at the Number Eight Cemetery near Cooter with Rev. Dave Lewelling officiating.
White Funeral Home was in charge of services.
