He was captured at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863 and sent to Point Lookout, MD, exchanged on February 13, 1865. After the war, he lived in Lee County VA before moving to AR.

"The First Century of Seligman, MO" - Freeling, who had fought with Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, had settled before the war on a large farm located about five miles SE of Seligman and across the state line in Benton Co., AR. Freeling and his family cleared the land, planted crops, began raising live stock and later established a thriving nursery business. The point on the nearby Frisco Railroad from which Freeling shipped his nursery stock was at one time named Osborne, AR. Freeling and Mary had six children who are William, Amos, Samuel, Nancy, Sarah and Mrs. N. H. Tracy of Monett. Their daughter, Nancy, was married to Mr. C. E. Apple and both are buried at Seligman.
