He worked as a field foreman for Minter-Wilson Drilling, operated a Daylight Donut Shop, was a horseshoer and trainer, cowboy, welder and livestock farmer. He married Ruth Spencer (third wife) on July 25, 1970, in Poteau, Oklahoma. He first married Wilma Robb and was also married to Laura Lee Troxel.
