Aug. 24, 1916, Cassville Republican - James Gaskins, one of the oldest if not the oldest man in Barry County passed from this life at his home in this city Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 16, of infirmities due to old age. He was 91 years, 7 months and 16 days old and had lived in Cassville and community for nearly fifty years. He was born in Saline County, Ill., Jan. 1, 1825. He lived in Illinois until after the Civil War. During that great civil struggle he espoused the Union cause and enlisted and served during the war with John A. Logan's command, in the 31st Illinois regiment. He received an honorable discharge at the close of the war and soon moved west, locating in Barry County on a farm three miles southwest of Cassville. Later he moved to town and had remained there until his death. Mr. Gaskins had been twice married. Both wives are dead. He leaves five sons and four daughters: I. H. Gaskins of Exeter, Wm. Gaskins of Coffeyville, Kan., Jake, John and Seth of this city, Mrs. D. E. Trim of Guthrie, Okla., Mrs. J. L. Richardson of St. Louis, Mrs. Chas. Hutchens and Mrs. B. F. Johnson of this city. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Oak Hill Cemetery, conducted by Rev. W. W. Love. His old soldier comrades of Cassville and community accompanied his body to its last resting place.
