Absalom was possibly born in Madison County, Alabama probably to Joseph Rhodes and Rachel Pearson. He married in 1840 in Morgan County, Alabama to Sarah Devault. To this union 11 children were born: Benjamin F. Rhodes, Joseph Rhodes, Nancy E. Rhodes, Sarah A. Rhodes (who became the first interment in the Blue Eye Cemetery), Wiley C. Rhodes, James Lafferty Rhodes, John W. Rhodes, Mary Jane Rhodes, Albert A. Rhodes, Orgile or Absalom A or O. Rhodes, and Thomas C. Rhodes. In the 1850s, the Rhodes family moved to Stone County, Missouri, settling just west of Blue Eye and north of the Missouri - Arkansas state line. In 1856, when their 12-year-old daughter, Sarah, died, Absalom donated land east of his home which became the Blue Eye Cemetery. On Oct. 15th, 1862, Absalom answered a knock on the door whereby he was shot and killed by bushwhackers (it is known that Alf Bolin and his gang were in the area and it is this researcher's belief that Alf and/or his gang were probably the ones who murdered Absalom). Because the family was so afraid, they did not bury Absalom in the Blue Eye cemetery, about half mile east of his home. Instead, he was interred on his property the next day. Absalom was 47 at the time of his death. Parents unknown.
