Son of Nile E. Jones and Gladys Schillie
19-YEAR OLD YOUTH KILLED BY TRAIN HERE
Nile Duane Jones of Near Novinger Pinned in Auto by Early Morning Crash at Kirksville Crossing, Dies Instantly; Special Wabash Train Was Carrying Show Troupe from Des Moines to St. Louis.
Nile Duane Jones, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Nile E. Jones, of route 2, Novinger, was killed instantly at 6:30 this morning when the car he was driving was struck by a Wabash special passenger train at the Elizabeth street crossing.
The Highway Patrol said Jones, who has been employed at the Davis-Cleaver Produce for the past 18 months, was driving a 1941 Chevrolet coach east on Elizabeth and the train was southbound.
Traveling about 35 miles per hour and carrying about seven cars, the train carried the auto a block and a half, stopping about halfway between Mill and Burton streets. An estimate of the speed of the Jones car could not be made.
The Novinger youth was pinned in the vehicle, and it was not until a wrecker arrived and a pulley system rigged up between the car, train and truck that the door was sprung open and the boy's body removed. The car was demolished.
The train was not a regularly scheduled passenger, but was reportedly carrying the London Festival Ballet troupe from Des Moines to St. Louis. The engineer was C. M. Davidson and the conductor R. L. Burger, both of Moberly. Also riding in the engine was G. H. Riley, road foreman of engines.
Everett Stiles of 1205 N. Centennial, who was standing in his yard, witnessed the accident. Stiles told the Patrol the train whistled as it approached the crossing.
Coroner Robert B. Davis said an inquest probably would not be held. He listed the cause of death as internal injuries and a skull fracture.
The son of Nile E. and Gladys Schillie Jones, the youth was born June 11, 1935, in Adair county.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Randall Lee and Dennis Edward, both of Novinger; and two grandfathers, Charles Jones, of Novinger, and Adam Schillie, of LaPlata. Mr. Jones was a graduate of the high school of Reorganized District R-1 at Novinger.
The body is at the Dee Riley funeral home, and funeral arrangements have not been completed.
