Mathew Nooning a young teacher living thirteen miles northwest of Edina was called from his work on earth on Tuesday, July 16. Mr. Nooning played ball on the Fouth [sic] of July and while very warm drank ice water. He was taken sick immediately and although every thing that kind friends and skilled physicians could do was done for him, the malady would not yield and Tuesday night he passed away. Mr. Nooning was a most exemplary young man and an excellent teacher. He was under contract to teach at the Black school house the ensuing winter.

His death is much to be deplored. He was laid to rest at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday July 17 in the Catholic cemetery at Adair mourned by many friends.
