Aged 23 Years
Son of Neal Payton and Mary Jane Schofield
Murdered by an armed intruder at a boarding house where he was living while he was in Quincy working on bridge construction. He was stabbed while going to the aid of two women, the proprietor and the cleaning person. The knife would extended into his liver and thus he bled to death with accompanied shock at the hospital sometime later. No one knew the name of the perpetrator, so the police had little to go on. It is unknown nor is it likely he was ever caught.
