FIRST RESIDENT OF COOTER SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK MONDAY
COOTER, Mo.--A heart attack proved fatal Monday afternoon to John T. Gilliland, 82, one of the oldest and most prominent residents of Cooter and the south part of Pemiscot County. He appeared in apparent good health, being stricken after walking around over his farm with his son. He died about five o'clock that afternoon.
Mr. Gilliland was born in Derby, Perry County, Indiana, Dec. 9, 1853. In 1874 he was married to Catherine Gilliland, of Indiana, who preceeded him in death in 1887. To this union was born six children, one of which survives him. Later, Mr. Gilliland was married to Ida S. Hinds of Newman, Ill., who also survives him. Six children were born to this union, and three are still living.
Mr. Gilliland came to Cooter 55 years ago, before there was a town. He was the first postmaster here, serving from 1889 to 1914. He also established the first sawmill and store here. He homesteaded his farm and owned large land interests in this section.
Funeral services were held Friday, at the Methodist Church, and conducted by the Rev. Emmett Butterworth pastor of the First Christian Church at Blytheville. Interment was in Number Eight cemetery.
Surviving him are his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Alma Copeland of Cooter, Mrs. Orphelia Frankson of Oakland, Calif., and Dr. Mary T. Gilliland of Los Angeles; one son, Clovis, of Cooter, seven grandchildren, two grandchildren, and a host of friends.
