Clares Astor Gilliland, 66, well-known South Pemiscot farmer and businessman, died Tuesday, September 17, at Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis.
Born in Cooter on January 9, 1897, he was the son of John T. and Ida Hinds Gilliland, and spent all of his life in that community. He was a veteran of World War I, having been in the S.A.T.C. in Kansas City and was a member of Pemiscot County Post 88 of the American Legion and of the I.O.O.F. at Steele.
On December 31, 1921, he was married to Euna Van Dyke and although they have no children of their own, they reared two foster children, Mrs. Jack Joseph of Seattle, Wash. and Mrs. Tom Legg.
Other survivors include two sisters, Dr. Mary L. Gilliland of Los Angeles and Mrs. Alma Eggert of Cooter; also several nephews and nieces.
A large number of out-of-town relatives and friends attended the funeral, held at Cooter later in the week.
