Everett Gates Services Set For Saturday

Everett Gates, 73, of 708 S. Fifth, died at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon at his home following an apparent heart attack.

Born in Kirksville on April 21, 1900, he was the son of Henry and Nancy Ellen Slavins Gates. In June 1929 in Kirksville he married Lavonia Vance who preceded him in death on July 27, 1960. Also preceding him in death were four half-sisters and two half-brothers.

Surviving are three sisters [should be daughters], Mrs. Johnie (Eva) Degard of Canton, Anna Jo Gates of the home and Mrs. Dale (Wilma) Slaughter of 601 S. South; one son, Bill Gates of the home; two step-sons, Warren Reese of LaGrange and Herman Reese of Prineville, Ariz. [should be Oregon], one step-daughter, Mrs. Russell (Norman [should be Norma] Jean) Bland of Lakeland, Fla.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three cousins.

Mr. Gates was employed by the City of Kirksville for several years, working for the water and sewer departments. From 1940 until his retirement in 1963 he was employed with International Shoe Company.

He had managed the International Shoe Ball Team and was also active in the Kirksville team in the Ill-Mo League. He remained active as a baseball coach until 1960.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the chapel of the Foster Memorial Home with the Rev. John Whitely, assistant pastor of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.

Was 61 Years Old; Funeral Services To Be Announced

Mrs. Nola Lavonia Gates, 61, died early this morning at her home at 708 S. Fifth.

Mrs. Gates was the daughter of John Melvin and Ella (Graham) Vance, and was born in Camden county Dec. 27, 1898. She was first married to James Reese, and to this marriage four children were born. Mr. Reese preceded her in death, and on June 4, 1929, at Macon. She was married to Everett Gates. To this marriage four children were born.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Billy Wayne Gates, of the home, but now in training at Camp McCoy, Wis., with the Army Reserves; three daughters, Anna Jo Gates, of the home, Mrs. Dale (Wilma Jean) Slaughter, Kirksville and Mrs. Johnnie (Eva) Degard. La Grange; surviving children by the first marriage are Warren Reese, LaGrange, Herman Reese, Prineville, Ore., and Mrs. Russell (Norma Jean) Bland, Lakeland, Fla.

Also surviving are three brothers, Clyde Vance, Liberty, Mo., Cloy Vance, Kirksville, and Emmett Vance, Edina; three sisters, Mrs. William (Lee) Brandenburg, Kirksville, Mrs. Louis (Lelah) Phillips, Kirksville, and Mrs. Ross (Pauline) McKim, Kirksville, and eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her parents; one son and two sisters.

Recently Mrs. Gates had been employed at Community Nursing Home No. 2.

The body is at the Dee Riley Funeral Home, and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
