John Stitzer, 59, of 1003 W. Martha, died at 8:45 Sunday morning in a Kirksville hospital, where he had been a patient since Aug 20. He had been in failing health the past year.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the chapel of the Foster Memorial Home with the Rev. Michael Flanagan, pastor of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, officiating. Burial was in Highland Park Cemetery.

Born in Crested, Butte, Colorado on Oct 29, 1913, he was the son of George and Antonia Stitzer. In Kirksville of July 29, 1934, he married Dorothy Sullivan and to this marriage four children were born.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Miller of 1017 W. Martha; three sons, Andrew Stitzer of Ryan. 2, Kirksville, Richard Stitzer of Queen City and Michael Stitzer of 701 W. Elizabeth; 18 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Tony (Mary)Kobe of Chicago, ILL., Donna Stitzer of 1006 W. Burton, Mrs. Bernard (Rose) Wallace of Rock Island, ILL., and Ray (Ann) Quinn of 1103 N. Luther and two brothers, George Stitzer of Matherville, ILL. and Frank Stitzer of Newton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Mr. Stitzer moved with his parents to Kirksville from Colorado at the age of six. Before his retirement due to ill health in 1971.
