Private Martin James Sullivan
Events moved rapidly for Pvt Martin Sullivan, 24, Adair County soldier who was reported missing in action in Germany and a few days ago was reported by the War Department to have been killed in action on March 16. The word was received by his wife, Mrs. Adalee Sullivan, of Kirksville.

Inducted in June, 1944, Pvt. Sullivan was sent to Fort Leavenworth, then to Camp Robinson. He was home on furlough in January, this year, then sent to Camp Meade and thence to France, arriving overseas Feb. 9, 1945. He was assigned to the 275th battalion of the 70th Division of Gen. Patch's Seventh Army and was killed a very few days after he reached the Seventh Army, probably less than a month.

Pvt Sullivan was employed at the Corrigan Coal Company in Novinger at the time of his induction, but moved his wife and three children, Ernest Lee, now 4, Sharon Kay, now 3, and Dorothy Jane, now 14 months, to Kirksville to be near his twin sister Mrs. Martha Jane Moore. He also leaves his mother, Susan Jane Sullivan, of novinger, three other sisters, Mrs Robert Roe, and Mrs John Stitzer of Kirksville; and Mrs Lee Bachman of Wilmington, Calif.; three brothers, Sgt Cleo Dee Sullivan, in the American Ninth Army in Germany, Seaman 2/C William Eugene Sullivan, in the Bahamas area, and one brother, Virgil Frances, at home. His twin sister's husband, Sgt. Pearl E. Moore, is with the 8th Air Force overseas.

Mrs. Sullivan received a letter today from Lt. Col. John H. McAleer, commanding the 275th Infantry, dated Mar. 31 stating that Pvt. Sullivan was killed in action Mar 16 in Western Germany, and that the end came suddenly and without suffering. He was buried in an American Military Cemetery in Eastern France, with a Chaplain officiating.

"May I convey to you,," Col. McAleer writes," the deep and sincere sympathy of the officers and men of this regiment in your bereavement. Martin proved himself a splendid soldier and his outstanding character resulted in his being held in high regard by all members of the command. *** Martin's personal effects will be sent to you at the earliest practicable time.
