“JACK” WOODS WAS LAST OF HIS BRANCH OF FAMILY
Funeral services for John Riley (Jack) Woods, aged 79 years, four months, and 27 days, native of Benton County, Arkansas and member of some of the oldest pioneer families of Bentonville and this vicinity who died at his home at Anderson, Mo., at 9:00 o’clock Friday morning, Feb. 21st, 1936, were held at 2:30 o’ clock Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Baptist Church, of which he had been a member for a great many years, conducted by the pastor. Due to the invalidism of his wife and the serious illness of a son, a short service was held at the home before that at the church. Burial was in the Anderson cemetery.
A few months ago Mr. Woods told a relative here that he remembered well standing on the Bentonville square, as a small boy, and watching the fire as the Benton County courthouse and county records were burned by Federal soldiers during the War Between the States. His father, the late John R. Woods, was sheriff of Benton County, and also county clerk, during the earlier days of this county. His wife, who before her marriage was Miss Lizzie Maxwell, is a native of this county, as was her mother. His wife’s father, the late M.B. Maxwell, was county surveyor here for 20 years.
Mr. Woods had lived at Anderson, Mo., for around 40 years, going there from this vicinity. R.L. (Bob) Lee and Miss Sallie Lee of Bentonville are his first cousins, and there are other of his more distant relatives living here. He was the oldest surviving member of his branch of the Woods family.
The following was handed the Democrat by one who has known Mr. Woods since she was a child.
A MEMORIAL
John Riley Woods was born in Bentonville, Ark., Sept. 24th, 1856; departed this life Feb. 21st, 1936, at his home at Anderson, Mo.
Jack (as he was known to all his friends) was the son of John R. and Margaret Ann Woods, and the grandson of Dysart Woods on his father’s side and Samuel P. Woods on his mother’s side, thus being an own cousin to both families of Woodses.
Jack was married to Miss Lizzie Maxwell Feb. 10th, 1887. To this union were born four children. The one little daughter died in early childhood and of the three sons, Riley and Cecil live at Anderson and Jewell at Stockton, Calif.
Several years ago this writer heard the Reverend Peter Carnahan say that was the seventy-second funeral. He had conducted for members of this “Old Pioneer Family” and each one had left the assurance of having lived and died in the blessed faith of our Lord Jesus.
Jack not only left us that assurance, but he went with the comforting knowledge that his wife, his three sons and his five grandsons were all Christians and members of the church he loved and supported.
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord!”
