Vernon Ward Hawkins, 84, of Stillwater, Okla., formerly of Anderson, Mo., departed this life Friday evening, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Grace Living Center in Stillwater, Okla.

Vernon entered this life Aug. 22, 1925, in Mounds, Okla., son of the late Maynard Gibson and Bertha Etta (Freed) Hawkins. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy for 11 years. After being honorably discharged, he served in the Missouri National Guard. He was united in marriage to Allene Garvin March 5, 1947, in Columbus, Kan., and to this union a son and daughter were born. He worked as a clerk for Tatum Mercantile in Anderson for more than 41 years. In the mid 1990s, he and Allene retired to the Waynesville and Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., area. He attended services at the Anderson United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Allene Hawkins Sept. 22, 2009; a son, Greg Allan Hawkins; a grandson, Matthew Howard, and a brother, Vance Hawkins.

Vernon is survived by his daughter, Carol Howard of Glencoe, Okla.; three grandchildren, Todd Howard of Hickory, N.C., Jason Howard of Wichita, Kan., and Jennifer Anderson of Glencoe, Okla.; a great-granddaughter, Caitlynn Bailey Anderson; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Graveside funeral services with full military honors for Vernon Hawkins were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at the Peace Valley Cemetery in Anderson, Mo., with Pastor Joshua Allen officiating. The family received friends Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes.
