Mr. Glenn L. Faler, 89, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at his home.
He was born on April 11, 1920 in Winfield, Kansas, the son of Ralph and Ethel (Stage) Faler.
Glenn was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 18, 1942; this was the beginning of a military career and way of life. He was in the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion and served in five campaigns during World War II: Normandy "D-Day" at Omaha Beach, Rhineland, Ardennes "Battle of the Bulge," Northern France and Central Europe. He received his honorable discharge on November 4, 1945 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. At that time he attended Watch Repair School in Denver, Colorado, on the GI Bill.
After receiving his degree he moved to Falls City, Nebraska, where he met Edna Becker. Glenn reenlisted in the Army and was united in marriage to Edna on December 10, 1948 by the Army Chaplain at Fort Knox, Kentucky. To this union six children were born.
During his second enlistment he served in the Korean War. The family spent the next 20 years moving from one deployment to the next, including time spent in Japan and Germany. While stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood he decided to purchase land near Cabool for his retirement. In 1964, Glenn retired from the Army and moved the family to the farm north of Cabool.
Glenn was very active in VFW Post 473 of Cabool. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the United Methodist Church of Cabool.
He spent a lot of time repairing watches and clocks for people in the community. He was also well known for his hobby of knife making. There are countless numbers of knives that he has made and "traded" to people; he didn't give them away, he traded for things such as a penny or even a pen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna, on August 8, 2008; two sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his children, Glenda Miller of Tipton, Missouri, Dennis Faler of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joyce Harrison of Springfield, Missouri, Nancy Smith of Cabool, Steve Faler of Springfield, and Douglas Faler; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Cabool with Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Interment with full military honors was in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
Glenn's services were held on the 65th anniversary of D-Day, this was very fitting for a man that served and dedicated his life to his country with honor and dignity. [Cabool Enterprise, June 11, 2009]
