A sane and safe July 4 holiday in Pemiscot county was marred by the death by drowning in the Mississippi River of Ronny Lee King, 8 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sammy King, of near Cottonwood Point.
The boy drowned at Island 18 about 12:15 p.m. Monday.
He was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Zara King, who live on the Stanley Greenway Farm.
The King family decided to go for a "swim" after dinner.
Witnesses say the victim and his 13 year-old uncle, Paul King raced ahead of the family to the river's edge.
Services will be at 2 this afternoon at the LaForge Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Survivors are his parents; a sister, Patricia King; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Zara King and Mrs. Maggie Haynes, Rt. 1, Steele.
