Holding more than 50 patents for his inventions.
Eads became a renowned engineer and inventor, generally being self taught, and making his fortune from inventing a diving bell to salvage items from the bottom of rivers. He also invented special ships for raising sunken ships. He was known all along the Mississippi River as Captain. During the Civil War, he was contracted to make iron clad ships, and would produce 30 such ships by the end of the war. Port Eads in LA is named after him and well as the Eads bridge which spans the Mississippi River.
