Obituary:

Lucy Hubbard dies Monday at age 104

One of Newton County's oldest citizens, Mrs. Lucy Hubbard, 104, 412 Maple Street, died at 7:50 p.m. Monday at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Hubbard was born Nov. 8, 1868, near Southwest City, on the Arkansas-Missouri border. She moved to Newton county when she was 10 years old and lived here ever since. She was the oldest of six children and the last survivor.
In 1897 she was married to Henry T. Hubbard, here in Neosho. He was also a native of the county. Thirteen months later he died. She reared her daughter and later had a part in rearing of two grandchildren after their mother's death.
She began her teaching career in 1890 and taught for 40 years in Newton County. Many local citizens had her as their teacher and visited her over the years.
Surviving are one granddaughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Stears, Haywood, Calif. and one great-grandson, George Alan Pickering, Haywood.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Freund-Thompson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. L.D. Sowder and the Rev. Paul Patton will officiate. Burial will be in the Elm Springs Cemetery.Friends may call at the funeral home from noon Wednesday until the funeral hour Thursday.
