Mrs. Hammett, widow of the late J.M. Hammett, and sister of Dr. John T. Fort of this city and Col. Henry Fort of Moberly, who was stricken with paralysis at the residence of her son, J.J. Lafon, in McDonald co, MO, on the 31st ultimo, died there on the 19th instant. She was a daughter of the late Dr. Fort, one of Randolph’s first settlers. She was a native of this county, having been born near this place in 1820. She was first married in 1842 or 1843 to James Lafon, and by him had two sons. He went to CA during the “big gold excitement,” and died there in 1851. Her eldest son was killed in the Confederate army. She was married again in 1870 to Mr. Hammett. He died in 1883, and shortly after his death she removed to McDonald co and made her home there with her son.
