Pemiscot county's first traffic fatally of the new year occurred Saturday, January 3, about 9:15 p.m., when a car, driven by Jerry Lynn Funderburk, 18, of Cooter, ran into loose gravel on Route D, almost four miles east of Highway 61 and turned over. Young Funderburk sustained a brain concussion among other injuies and died at 11:20 a.m., Sunday, in the the Wall's Hospital in Blytheville, where he was taken immediately after the accident. State Trooper Harold Logsdon, stationed at Hayti, said the car, a 1952 Dodge, was a total wreck.

The accident victim was the son of Mr. and Mrs. V.L. Funderburk, living about a mile south of Cooter and was born and reared there. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., at the Methodist church in Cooter, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Niblack and the Rev. J.E. Hall, and interment was in Mt. Zion cemetery near that place. Former schoolmates of the young man acted as both honorary and active pallbearers.
He was one of a family of nine children and is survived, in addition to his parents, by three brothers and five sisters -- Lois and Glenn of Cooter and Roy Funderburk of White Plains, N.Y.; Mrs. Helen Ozment and Miss Dorothy Funderburk of Cooter, Mrs. Lillian Johnson of Hayti, Mrs. Ruth Williamson, now in Germany, and Mrs. Laura Turner of
Riverside, Calif. Also his grandmother, Mrs. Essie Goff, of Blythville survives.
