Missouri

Nov 25, 1842 Garrard Co., KY
Jan 12, 1910 Elk Creek, Texas, MO
Wife of Littleton Padgett

The subject of this sketch, Mrs. Nancy A. Padgett, was born in Garrett county, Kentucky, Nov. 26, 1842. She was united in marriage with L. Padgett June 5, 1857; to this union 12 children were born, only 10 surviving her, two having preceding her to the soul's bright home. Those yet living are: James Padgett, Eubanks, Ky.; Mrs. Sarah Brown, Bado, Mo.; Mrs. Martha Gooch, Yale, Okla.; Mrs. Katie Miller, Grubville, Mo.; L. G. Padgett, Simmons, Mo.; N.J. Padgett, West Plains, Mo.; Mrs. Louisa Bennett, Littell, Wash.; Mrs. Maggie Hayes, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Lizzie Cox, Ellis Prairie, Mo.; John L. Padgett, Cincinnati, Ohio.
She became a member of the Baptist church at age of 48 years and lived a consistent member 20 years or until time of her death, which occurred at her home at Elk Creek, Jan. 12, 1910. She with her husband and family came to Missouri in 1868.
Along with the many blessings we all receive there must be added some sorrows and the demise of sister Padgett is one of our sorest trials.
A simple service was conducted at the family residence, where a large audience of sympathizing friends proved by their presence and tears the high esteem in which they held the dear departed sister. Rev. Dickenson, Christian minister, read the Scripture lesson and then spoke a few words of tribute of sister Padgett, uttered a tender and touching prayer, commended and committed the bereaved ones to God, who alone can cure the sorrows of the world.
The body was laid to rest in the beautiful, quiet Latimer graveyard; but let us not think of the beautiful, lovable spirit as being entombed there, but only the body, the dwelling place of the soul. The spirit has gone to God. Her illness was not a long, tiresome one but was short. She suffered only about two weeks when the Reaper said, "It is enough", and the calm, peaceful spirit was called home to rest. Although her illness was a short one she showed by her quiet submissiveness how brave she was, and even when the death mark was stamped visibly upon her placid features she was cheerful and confident. She was, when in health, of a sunny, optimistic disposition, founding her cheerfulness not in the outward of pleasant circumstances but in an undying faith in God and so in death she retained the same characteristics of an untroubled trust.
Let us not say "farewell" but "good night," as we know when the long sleep is over, she and all others will wake in the gladsome day and bid each other "good morning." In that sweet confidence which may also be ours, let us wait, and while we wait in the quietness and the darkness of the night our hands go gropingly towards the hand that held hers last, and through that touch of the hand we tell our dear brother Padgett that which cannot be put into fit words, that we love him and care. For we need not whisper that secret which he already holds in his heart, that the Father cares, and that he and we and all the world abide under the shadow of His wings.
