J.D. (Jadie) Michie, who has made his home with his sister, Mrs. Lena Barnard of near Denton, was drowned last Thursday afternoon in the State Line or Belle Fountain Ditch near Hornersville, where according to such evidence as gathered, it is believed that he suffered a heart attack while attempting to recover a rifle he had dropped in the water.
There was no eye witness to the drowning. With several friends and neighbors, he was on a fishing and hunting trip. Others of the party had gone to Hornersville or across the ditch to hunt, and upon their return, found that Michie was missing and that his hat was afloat on the water. The body was recovered about 7:30 Friday morning.
Mr. Michie was a World War veteran. He was born September 22, 1893, and at death was age 46 years, 11 months and 7 days. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lena Barnard and Mrs. Mable Overturf, also one brother, Jack, of Steele, besides nieces, nephews and other relatives. A host of friends, besides his relatives, mourn his death.
The body was brought to the German Undertaking Co. in Steele and funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Assembly of God Church in Denton by Rev. Van Bibber. Burial was in the Barnard family cemetery near Denton.
Pallbearers were members of the National Guard, namely, Tom Cooper, Hamp Wade, Roy Lee Barnes, Rhondal Burton, Odell Curry and Odis Hayes.
