Beulah Lillian Samford, 100, passed away April 10, 1996 at the Pemiscot Memorial Health Center in Hayti, Mo.
Funeral service was held Monday, July 3, for William Rance Samford, 80, at the Samford Church of Christ, Dr. Albert G. Lemmons of Henderson, Tenn. officiated.
Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery with John W. German Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bob Samford, he was born November 1, 1886 at Samford, Mo. and died July 1, 1967 at the Chickasawba Hospital in Blytheville. He was married to Beulah Jones November 2, 1913.
Mr. Samford, well know as "Boss" by his friends and neighbors, was a pioneer resident of the community which is identified by his family name. For more than 30 years he operated the general store at Samford, closing the business in 1960. The Enterprise and other newspapers carried stories of the closing of the store at the time, heralding the occasion as the end of an era. During the time the store was open it was the center of activity in the area and also housed the post office.
The Samford store was originally opened in 1897 by W.A. "Wes" Samford and "Boss" started work there in 1908. He became the owner in 1930.
Pallbearers were Billy Nickles, Bill Northern, William Biggs, Finus Cope, Clifford Jachson and Gary Johns.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Beulah Samford, Steele; three sons, Eugene Samford, Hornersville, C.L. (Jack) Samford and F.H. (Joe) Samford, both of Steele; three daughters, Mrs. Malvera Turner, Hornersville, Mrs. Carol Sue Flowers, Campbell, Mo. and Mrs. Wanda Mae Swindle, Caruthersville; his step-mother, Mrs. Iva Samford, Holland, two half-sisters, Mrs. Jewel Milburn and Mrs. Helen Dunahue both of Flint, Mich., one step-brother, Ira Zahner, Kirkwood, Mo.; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Born October 22, 1895 in Pavatts, Tenn., she is the daughter of the late Eugene Iverson Jones and Gertrude Shelton Jones.
Mrs. Samford was a long time member of the Samford Church of Christ.
On November 2, 1913, she was united in marriage to W.R "Boss" Samford who preceded her in death July 1, 1967. Also a daughter, Carol Sue Dock in 1984 and a son, Cullen I. "Jack" Samford on December 19, 1995. She is preceded in death also by three sisters and five brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Malvera Turner of Hornersville, Mo. and Mrs. Wanda Mae Avis of Steele, Mo.; one niece, Joan Stegall whom she raised of Blytheville, Ark.; two sons, Eugene I. Samford of Hornersville, Mo. and Floyd Harold "Joe" Samford of Steele, Mo.; 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held April 12 at 10 a.m. at the Samford Church of Christ near Steele, Mo. with Mr. Barry Sellars officiating.
Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele, Mo.
