William Fredrick “Fred” Raby of Cabool passed from this earthly life on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the age of 101. He was born in Myrtle, MO, on January 29, 1911, to J.C. and Mary Frances (Walker) Raby. Fred married Vivian (Harding) Raby on November 20, 1932, in Smithville, AR, and lived in Arkansas until moving to Missouri in 1955. Vivian preceded him in death on September 25, 2000. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Fred was a lifelong farmer, and worked for many years at the shoe factory in Cabool. He was an avid hunter and fisher, but his true love was showing champion Missouri Foxtrotters at the horse shows. A longtime member of the Cabool and Willow Springs Saddle Clubs, Fred’s horses won hundreds of individual show and season sweepstakes awards. He also used his skills as a horseman to give back to the community, as he was often the top pledge-receiver in the Houston to Licking Trail Ride to benefit the fight against cancer. Fred was also a board member and frequently President of the Burdoin Township road committee.
Fred was a member of the Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Cabool and was a freemason for more than 75 years, being certified as a 50 Year Freemason by the Mountain Grove Lodge #158 of The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Missouri.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruth West of Cabool, and Karen Ebbs of Joplin. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren,14 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
