Arthur Bennie Combs Skyles, 86, son of Jess and Nettie Brown Combs, was born July 25, 1920, at Bendavis. He died Nov. 8, 2006, at Lester E. Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.
He was adopted March 6, 1930, by Sydney and Lenna Irwin Skyles.
In 1937, he moved to Kansas to work in the wheat harvest. He returned Dec. 20, 1939, to the Cabool area.
Mr. Skyles joined the Army Feb. 16, 1941, and was stationed at Camp Robinson, Ark. He was transferred to California in 1941, for 22 months to Bethel, Alaska,, and the Aleutian Islands until the Japanese were liberated. After coming back to the states, he was sent to Europe for 14 months before receiving his honorable discharge.
He received four Battle Stars, Aleutian, Central Europe, Northern France and Rhineland; a Good Conduct Medal and an American Defense Medal.
He married Cora Lee Sanders June 1, 1946. They had two children.
Mr. Skyles worked in construction and farming most of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and adopted parents; two brothers, Floyd and Albert Combs; two sisters, Inez Papst and Margarette Combs; a half brother, Clyde Kitchen; a half sister, Opal Brown; and a granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Linda Fay Hall; son, Bennie Eugene Skyles; one sister, Mae Juanita Brown; a half brother, Claude Kitchen; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Nov. 11 at the Steely Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. George Sholtz officiating under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
