Wesley Batley, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Batley of Route 1, Bragg City, drowned last Saturday shortly before noon while swimming in Ditch No. 8, about a mile southeast of Tinkerville in Dunklin county, the Dunklin Democrat reports.
Dunklin County Sheriff Jack Barnes said his office was notified that the youth was missing at noon Saturday and he went to the scene with Deputy Sheriff Oscar Foster and Trooper Wayne C. Brooks.
Feeling along the bottom with poles, rescue workers located the body and Barnes removed his clothing, dived in and brought the dead youth to the surface. He said the water was about eight feet deep where Batley drowned and was cold enough to have caused severe cramps. He said the body had been in the water about an hour and a half when brought to the surface.
Funeral services were held Monday afternon with Lentz Funeral Home of Kennett in charge and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery at Steele.
