Lillian Ruth Hamilton, lifelong resident of Cabool, died in Texas County Memorial Hospital, Houston, Missouri, on September 14, 1991 after a short illness.
She was the last surviving child of David S. (King) Hamilton and Cordelia Johnson.
She was born on January 4, 1907. After graduating from Cabool High School, she taught in a one-room rural school for a year. For several years she, along with her sisters, Pearl and Jewell, operated a dressmaking shop in Cabool. She also worked for Ozark Central Telephone Company of Cabool and Bell Telephone Company in Springfield for nearly 40 years. Ill health forced her into early retirement.
At the time of her passing she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a friendly and neighborly person who will be missed.
Besides her parents, she has been preceded in passing by the two sisters, Pearl and Jewell; three half-brothers, Tom and Bill Hamilton and Grover Phillips, Sr., and two half-sisters, Minnie and Della.
She is survived by seven nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday, September 16, 1991 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rice officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery under direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home.
Miss Lola Pearl Hamilton, daughter of David Smith and Cordelia Hamilton, was born August 24, 1897, in Cabool, Mo. She passed away at her home in Cabool February 3, 1971, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 11 days.
She was a lifelong resident of Cabool. She worked with the Ozark Casket Co., several years, and later was a telephone operator with the Ozark Central and Southwestern Bell companies. She served as chief operator for Western Telephone and Light Co., before she retired in 1962.
Her many years of extra courtesies and services extended to strangers and those in need, will never be forgotten. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and joined the church in early life. She also was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge and active in all local organizations.
Survivors include two brothers: W.D. Hamilton of Portland, Ore.; Grover Phillips of Beaumont, Kans.; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas McEarchern, Hillsboro, Ore.; Miss Jewell Hamilton and Miss Ruth Hamilton, both of Cabool; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday afternoon in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Norris officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery with Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home in charge.
Cordelia Hamilton, daughter of Woodly and Perlina Johnson, was born near Cabool. She lived her entire life in Texas County. She moved to Cabool in December 1920. She was a member of the Cabool Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors.
She was married to G.E. Phillips and to this union was born one son, Grover Phillips of Beaumont, Kansas. He preceded her in death.
On September 24, 1896, she was united in marriage to David S. Hamilton who preceded her in death June 18, 1920. To this union was born four daughters; Misses Pearl of the home, Jewell and Ruth of Springfield, and one daughter who preceded her in death on February 3, 1903.
Also she leaves to mourn her passing three step-children; Mrs. Minnie Ray of Hillsboro, Oregon, Mrs. Della McEachern of Twin Falls, Idaho, and W.D. Hamilton of Portland, Oregon, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. One step-son, Tom Hamilton passed away in May 1959.
With her passing went a vast store of knowledge of Texas County and Cabool history. Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed sharing past events with those who knew her but did not live in the past.
She possessed a keen memory and an active interest in life. She was especially interested in politics and kept up with the daily world news as well as local events. Her keen sense of humor and alertness endeared her to all who knew her. Interment was in Cabool Cemetery. [Note: David S. Hamilton is buried In Hamilton Cem., Cabool, Texas, MO]
