Thelma Etta Akins was born July 20, 1898, in the state of Oklahoma and died March 25, 1982 at 5:30 a.m. in the Texas County Memorial Hospital, Houston, Missouri, after an illness of several months. Her age at the time of her death was 83 years, eight months and five days. She had lived in the Cabool area since the age of seven, having moved here with her parents, George W. and Ida Cora Akins.
Thelma professed faith in Christ when a young woman and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool.
She was married to John W. Helterbrand (Bill) January 2, 1918 and to this union one son, Lloyd, was born. She was an avid gardener and excellent homemaker. She devoted her lifetime to excel in both. After the death of her husband Bill in 1977, Thelma's failing eyesight and poor health confined her close to home.
Survivors are one son, Lloyd; two sisters, Cecil Skyles, Cabool; Ruth Dale, Liberty, Missouri; one half-brother, Guy Akins, Houston Missouri; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in Cabool First Baptist Church with Revs, K.A. Bolerjack and Dick Wakefield officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery under direction of Elliott-Gentry.


John William Helterbrand, one of eleven children born to Absalom and Margaret Helterbrand, a Texas County pioneer couple, was born on a farm northeast of Cabool July 23, 1888 and died July 21, 1977, in the Texas County Memorial Hospital shortly after admittance. He had been in ill health several months.
He was married January 2, 1918 to Thelma Etta Akins and to this union one son, Lloyd was born.
He professed faith in Christ when a young man and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Cabool, where he taught an adult Sunday School class until his health failed.
Bill, or Will as he was known by many, was a retired farmer and stockman. He and his brother, Eula were partners, well known in the community as the Helterbrand Brothers. Their many ventures included sawmilling, threshing and dealers in livestock. They also owned and operated a feed and fertilizer store in Cabool for several years.
Bill was a man who was highly esteemed and his presence and influence will be greatly missed not only by those near and dear to him but in the whole vicinity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and four brothers. Surviving are his wife, Thelma, and son, Lloyd; two sisters, Jewell Barnett, Ausgusta, Kansas and Gertrude Helterbrand, Cabool; one daughter-in-law, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friend.
Services were 2:30 Sunday in the Cabool First Baptist Church with Rev. K.A. Bolerjack and Dick Wakefield officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery under direction of Elliott-Gentry.
