Carolyn Sue "Susie" Forsythe, age 77, of Springfield, passed away at 1:10 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, in St. John's Regional Health Center.
Susie was born in Springfield on October 22, 1931, to Robert and Lottie Burns. She was a graduate of Springfield Senior High Class of 1949, and attended MSU where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Simga Sorority. She married Ray L. Forsythe on July 1, 1951, in Springfield. Susie and Ray returned to Springfield from Cabool, Mo., in 1957, and cofounded Town and County Men's and Women's Clothing. They later opened several stores in Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis, Tenn., and held an interest in several other stores in Tulsa, Okla., Joplin, Mo., and Springfield. Susie was an avid pianist, formally teaching piano lessons and was blessed with the gift of playing by ear.
Ray and Susie were instrumental in establishing the Forsythe Athletic Center at MSU which was dedicated in 1985, and also established the Ray and Susie Forsythe Scholarship Fund for Cabool, Mo. students awarded to a member of each class at MSU.
She was a member of SMMA and served on the Board of the Art Museum, a sustaining member of Springfield Junior League, Hickory Hills Country Club and a lifelong member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of several bridge clubs and two investment clubs. A very good friend of Susie, best described her as follows, "If life were a beauty pageant, Susie would be named Miss Congeniality."
Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray, who died on June 25, 2001; and her sister-in-law, Wilma Forsythe.
She is survived by her son, Ray Bob Forsythe and his wife, Donna of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter Pam Forsythe Bryce of Springfield, Mo.; grandson Raymond Connor Forsyth; brother-in-law Max Forsythe; and nephew Steve Forsythe, both of Cabool, Mo.; and nephew Robert Forsythe and wife, Cindy of Little Rock, Ark., and their daughters, Tiffany and Stephanie.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, with the Reverend Mary Ann Morris officiating. Burial will be in Cabool Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today, in the funeral home.
