Joseph Francis Boster, 85, son of Reuben and Ollie Aldridge Boster, was born July 19, 1913, near Tyrone. He died Sept. 26, 1998, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston following a lengthy illness. He spent his early years working in Iowa but always considered the Boster farm, which his father homesteaded in 1877, his home.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Jan. 25, 1941, to Sept. 28, 1945. He flew in two days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served 39 months there, where he was sales clerk for the station hospital post exchange, attaining the rank of Tech 5.
Prior to entering the Army, he planted, cultivated and harvested wheat, corn, oats and hay and farmed a 90-acre tract of land. He still lived on the homestead, and cooked on the wood cook stove his mother bought during the war. His health began to fail two years ago, and he moved into a trailer to be near his brothers. He helped organize the Tyrone ball team, where he was catcher.
He was an avid gardener and loved music, both country and gospel. He studied the Bible daily and was a member of the Grandview Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Martha Culler, and a brother, Gregory Aldridge. Surviving are two brothers, Sherman and Walter Boster of Houston. Services were Sept. 28 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kendall Ford officiating. Burial was in the Tyrone Cemetery.
