Mrs. Nellie Van Orsdel Cody was born at State Center, Iowa, August 28, 1869, and departed this life January 27, 1951 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd H. Ice, Houston. Her age at the time of death was 81 years and 5 months.
When a young woman she was converted and joined the Christian Church, State Center, Iowa, where she remained a member until death. As long as her health permitted she was known for her many kindnesses to others.
In 1903, she and her parents, John and Emma Van Orsdel, moved to Cabool. She was a photographer and opened a studio where the Cabool post office now is. She continued her work until December 25, 1906, when she was united in marriage to Bert Cody. To this union were born two children, Clara and Gilbert.
On November 11, 1918 her husband passed away, leaving her the task of rearing the two children.
In 1938, she moved to Houston to make her new home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ice. In 1940 she had a stroke, leaving her a invalid for 10 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Floyd H. Ice, Houston; one son, Gilbert V. Cody, Etna, Calif.; three grandsons: Bill Cody; of Etna, Calif., Cody Wm. and Herbert Ice of Houston; one sister Mrs. F. Rose Dickerson, Mt. Grove, Mo., two brothers; J.W. Van Orsdel, Ceres, Calif. and A.C. Van Orsdel, Grants Pass, Oregon.
Funeral services were conducted at the Cabool Baptist Church January 30, by Rev. J.R. Halbrook, St. James, Mo.; and Rev. Leland I. Heriford, Houston. Interment was made in the Cabool cemetery under the direction of Elliott Funeral Home. [Houston Herald]

The people of this vicinity were shock and stunned Monday morning when the news spread that B.H. Cody had died early that morning on his farm four miles northeast of Cabool, with the Spanish influenza.
Mr. Cody went to Kansas a couple of weeks ago to attend a thoroughbred cattle sale and returned complaining of feeling ill. He took to his bed and soon had a fully developed case of the dreaded disease. Burt was a fine man from every angle, a staunch friend, a true and loving husband and an energetic, successful farmer.
The whole community joins in offering sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. The funeral was private as was necessary under conditions. He was laid to rest in the Cabool cemetery Monday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock. Rev. F.E. DuBois officiating at the grave.
Mr. Cody was born at Mountain Home, Arkansas 37 years ago. He leaves a wife and two children; a son and a daughter, to mourn his loss in company with his many neighbors and friends. [Cabool Enterprise]
