Jesse F. Coatney, a long time resident of Willow Springs, quietly passed away late Monday night, Feb. 23, 2009, while at St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View due to natural causes. Born Dec. 28, 1916, to William A. and Martha E. (Wonnel) Coatney in Texas County, Mo., he was 92 years old. Having grown up during the Depression era, Jesse went to work at an early age. He worked his whole life and knew the meaning of hard work. As a result, he developed a strong work ethic that he later instilled in his children. He never took things for granted and knew how to "make due." In fact, it was said that he would use things until they just gave out; then would rebuild or fix them and reuse them again and again. Mr. Coatney didn't just know the meaning of hard work, but also the meaning of commitment and taught his children the importance of it also through example. He always said, "It was easier to keep up than to catch up." Mr. Coatney was a bricklayer by profession and was a proud member of the Bricklayers Union #10 and the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasterers International Union of America. However, he was described as an excellent handyman who could build or fix just about anything. All he had to do was look at something and he could build the same thing out of scraps or junk and, much to people's surprise, it would work, too. Mr. Coatney also had many enjoyments in his life and was described as an avid outdoorsman who liked to hunt and fish. However, he especially loved to work in his many gardens. It was said he never had less than three gardens at a time. He grew so much produce, he used to give it away to his friends and neighbors. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Mr. Coatney was preceded in death by his daughter Beula Coatney; his parents; and six brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Ruby Z. (Johnston) Coatney of Willow Springs and his children, Evelyn McReynolds and her husband, Lewis, of Willow Springs; Della Stolba and her husband, Dale, also of Willow Springs; Carolyn Lawson and her husband, Dale, of Cherokee, Kan.; and Delmar Coatney and his wife, Margaret, of Willow Springs. He is further survived by 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Jesse were Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at the Westside Family Life Center in Willow Springs, with Pastor David Lovan officiating. Interment was at the Howell Memorial Park in Pomona. Arrangements were under the direction of Willow Funeral Home.
