Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser, unknown date

Jonathan Roberts, 90, one of Eugene's oldest citizens, died at his home there Tuesday, January 20. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church last Thursday afternoon by Rev. A.L. Alexander. Burial was made in the Eugene Cemetery.

Mr. Roberts was born in Ohio in 1857, and was the last member of a family of fourteen. A twin brother died in infancy. When a young man, he came to Miller County to visit his sister, Mrs. H. M. Sutton, whose husband was president and co-owner of the Miller County Institute at Spring Garden.

Mr. Roberts bought an interest in the school and helped establish it as Miller County's first institution of higher learning.

In 1889, Mr. Roberts married Rose V. Fisher and they were
parents of two children. In 1906, the family moved to Eugene where Mr. Roberts became manager of the Eugene Mercantile Co. Mrs. Roberts died in October 1938. Mr. Roberts was a charter member and Elder in the Eugene
Church.

Besides the two children, Marjorie of the home, and Harley of Kansas City, he is survived by a foster-daughter, Mrs. Edna Hill of Smithton, and a grandchild, Sue Ann Roberts.
