John & Shirley Tindel...
John Curtis Tindel, 69, son of Curtis Jordan and Nell Catherine Johnson Tindel, was born Nov. 19, 1935, at Cabool.
Shirley Ann Haynes, 70, daughter of Theron Lewis Haynes and Blanche Millar Haynes, was born Oct. 12, 1934, at Gladewater, Texas. As a young girl, her family moved to a farm north of Cabool
They died Dec. 23 or 24, 2004, at their home at Cabool.
The school play during Mrs. Tindel's senior year in high school provided a way for the Tindels to get acquainted, as he gave her rides home from practice. They were married while John was in college in Columbia and Shirley was in nursing school in Springfield. They lived in Columbia.
After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees, Mr. Tindel moved his family to Crawfordsville, Ind., where he was a professor at Wabash College.
The Tindels moved back to Columbia, where he attended law school, graduating in 1963 with a juris doctorate. He moved his family to Nevada, Mo., where he joined the practice of Don Kennedy.
In 1968, Mr. Tindel accepted a position in the legal department at Monsanto Chemical Corp. in St. Louis and the family moved to Webster Groves. During a vacation in 1968, the family toured the Ozark Watermills Trail and discovered Dawt Mill. In 1972, they purchased land near Dawt, which became a refuge and sanctuary for the family.
In 1975, Mr. Tindel accepted a position with St. Paul Title and the family moved to Rochester, Mich. In 1977, they moved to Cabool, where Mr. Tindel opened a law office on Spruce Street. With the purchase of Hiett Title Co. in Houston in 1980, he divided his time between the Cabool and Houston offices.
Mrs. Tindel was the epitome of motherhood for her children and would adopt people to include in her family regardless of their last name. Her bread and cookies sustained hundreds as she took care and ministered to others, especially children.
Mr. Tindel's love of music was legendary, leading the congregational singing in church to music parties at the house. The universal language of music took him from Bratcher's Ridge in Ozark County, Belarus and Key West, Fla.
In the 1980s, the Tindels discovered Key West, Fla., while visiting their son. Mr. Tindel joined the Florida Keys Chorale, a community choir. His vocal teacher and coach, Emily Lowe, encouraged his singing.
The couple was long-time members of the First Baptist Church in Cabool.
They observed their 50th wedding anniversary and celebrated all year long with a trip to the Bahamas in May with the chorale, a cruise across the Pacific and a tour of the Hawaiian Islands.
Mr. Tindel was preceded in death by his parents and two infant brothers.
Surviving the couple are their three children, John Maurice Tindel of Freedom, Calif., Curtis James Tindel of Tecumseh and Jeanne Tindel of Cabool; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Tindel is also survived by two brothers, Jerry Haynes of Topanga, Calif., and Allen Haynes of Windsor, Colo.
Services were Dec. 29 at the First Baptist Church in Cabool with the Rev. Dick Wakefield officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Cabool Alumni Association Russelle Simonsen Music Scholarship, Cabool Library or Missouri Baptist Children's Home.
