Obit: Ivy Jewel McCubbins
The sun rose on Christmas Eve 1922 and a precious "Jewel" was born in Los Angeles, California to Carr Finley and Sadie Ethel Lord Newton. The baby girl was named Ivy Jewel. Ivy was raised in California, attended kindergarten through sixth grade at Muscatel Schooling Rosemead, seventh grade at McKinley School in San Gabriel, entered high school at Alhambra High in Alhambra, and attended her last two years at Mark Kepple High in Monterey Park graduating in 1941.
During high school,Ivy was selected as one of the majorettes with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company Band in Los Angeles. Ivy performed throughout California, including San Francisco and the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena and had the honor of performing in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Ivy took many majorette honors in competition including placing second in the Southern California Baton Twirling Contests in San Pedro, California. Ivy was also chosen as a queen's attendant to ride on the San Gabriel float in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.
Ivy met her Prince, Merle, farm boy from Missouri, at a Southern Pacific Railroad Company dance. Merle, being the exceptional jitterbug dancer, danced his way into Ivy's heart. They were married on July 2, 1942, in the Episcopal Church in San Gabriel. The maid of honor was her sister Carolyne and the best man was Merle's friend from Cabool, Millard McCall. The couple spent their honeymoon in Malibu Beach, California.
In March 1943 the couple moved to Cabool, Missouri, for 15 months and lived with Ivy's father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Elsie McCubbins. On March 8, 1944, the couple became the happy and proud parents of their first child, Sheryl Ann, who was born in the home of Albert and Elsie McCubbins. The couple lived with Merle's parents until June 1944 when they returned to San Gabriel.
In October 1944 Ivy's husband began his tour of duty with the United States Navy. In October 1945 Ivy joined Merle in Key West, Florida. After Merle was honorably discharged from the Navy in March 1946 the couple returned to the home of Albert and Elsie McCubbins where they lived briefly, then moved into their first home which did not have indoor plumbing and electricity. It was often expressed that it must have been true love for a city girl with all the modern conveniences to move to the country without plumbing and electricity.
On Thanksgiving Day 1947, a second daughter was welcomed into the family. Linda Sue was delivered by Dr. Garrett Hogg in her parents home. Dr. Hogg was called again to the McCubbins household on January 11, 1950, for the arrival of Bonnie Jean. On September 23, 1953 Dr. Hogg was called one more time for the delivery of Rebecca Lynn. (Note: She was born in the house at 344 North Paul Street - contributed by purpleturpin@gmail.com on 10/15/2018)
Ivy was a member of the First United Methodist of Cabool. She served as president of the Wesleyan Service Guild and was a member of the Margaret Reddick Circle.
Ivy participated in many civic organizations including Cabool Study Club, Women's Chamber of Commerce, Texas County Democratic Women's Committee, election judge and volunteer for the United Fund Drive. Ivy was an advocate of the renovation of the Cabool High School football Stadium and in October 1998 made one of the first donations for the renovation.
Ivy belonged to the Order of Eastern Star for many years and was installed Worthy Matron December 1958. She attended the 85th Annual Session Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star in October 1959 as a page
Ivy served on the board of the Rainbow for Girls for many years. Ivy believed in the philosophy of this organization so much that she served as Mother Advisor for several years.
Ivy enjoyed a multitude of activities including cooking, canning fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden, raising honey bees, sewing, crocheting, playing the organ, swimming, tennis and traveling to Branson, Missouri, for the performances at various theaters.
When Ivy was in her 50s she reacquainted herself with her tennis racquet, wining numerous tennis tournaments in her area. After her double by-pass surgery, she gave up tennis to crochet afghans.
Ivy's love for twirling inspired her to share and teach twirling to young girls in Cabool. Ivy charged 25 cents per person for each lesson.
Together with Merle she was active in county, state and national Democratic functions, and later becoming First Lady when Merle was elected Mayor of Cabool.
