Edith Lilly Wise Lewis, 91, daughter of Alvin Almis and Mary Louise Burton Wise, was born Nov. 13, 1916, on the family farm south of Squires. She died March 31, 2008, at the Kabul Nursing Home at Cabool.
She received her elementary education at Frye School, a one-room building south of Squires. She received a school day remembrance book Jan. 29. 1932, from her seventh grade teacher for promptness and regular attendance.
She married Othol Edward Lewis of Cabool March 27, 1937. They had three children. Mr. Lewis had a son from a previous marriage.
The early years of their marriage were in San Francisco, Calif., where Mr. Lewis worked in the steel mills. In 1946, they purchased a farm a mile west of Cabool, naming it Sunny Brook Farm.
Mrs. Lewis loved to work in her flower gardens and had more than 200 varieties of iris. She liked to give starts of plants to family and friends. She loved to sew and in the winter made quilts and crocheted doilies, tablecloths and bedspreads.
She liked to play cards with her brothers and sisters when they visited. In 1972, she had recipes published in the "Missouri Sampler," a cookbook composed of recipes from throughout the state.
Mrs. Lewis became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cabool March 29, 1964.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four sisters, Leith "Lee" Price, Bernice Minder, Elvia Robertson and Lee DeGase; two brothers, Verble Wise and Boyd Wise.
Surviving are two sons, Ron Lewis of Belle, Jerry Lewis of Cabool and John Lewis of West Plains; stepson, Edward Lewis of Marysville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were April 4 at the Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home Chapel in Cabool with the Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery.

Othol Edward Lewis, the son of James Edward and Ollie (Miller) Lewis, was born on April 20, 1906, on the family farm in Eunice, Missouri. He departed this life on November 26, 1996, at West Vue Nursing Home in West Plains, Missouri, at the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 6 days.
In 1923, his parents moved to Cabool, Missouri, in order for him to attend high school there. He graduated from Cabool High School on May 12, 1927.
On March 27, 1937, he was united in marriage to Edith Lillie Wise of Squires, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Ron Lewis of Belle, Missouri, Jerry Lewis of the family home, and John Lewis of West Plains, Missouri. Born from a previous marriage was Ed Lewis of San Jose, California.
After working in the steel mills in California for several years, Mr. Lewis returned with his family to Cabool, where they lived for many years on Sunny Brook Farm one mile west of town. In 1972, he retired from Byron's Market, where he had worked as a meat cutter for many years.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ollie, and by a sister, Orba Ice of Licking, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Edith; four sons, Ed and wife Marilyn of San Jose, California; Ron and wife Brenda of Belle, Missouri; Jerry of the family home; and John and his wife Deborah of West Plains, Missouri; two brothers, Ray Lewis of Eldon, Missouri, and Elmon "E.O." Lewis of Mariposa, California; two sisters, Faye Hamilton and Marie Mitchem, both of Cabool; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; and a host of other family and friends.
Mr. Lewis became a member of the United Methodist Church in Cabool on March 29, 1964, and continued his membership there until his death. His strenght was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a loving husband and father, and he will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.
