Carnell Grocery
Pineville Herald
In most every town there is one general store that is outstanding and a leader in it's line - to Peter Leonard Carnell goes this distinction in Pineville. They have one of the largest and most complete lines of staple and fancy groceries, fresh and cured meats, dry-goods, hardware, lumber, undertaking and also operate a large canning factory.
In the year 1897 just one year before the Spanish-American war was begun, PL Carnell started in business in Pineville. His capital at that time amounted to about $2200. From AC Walters, he purchased a store located on the west side of the square where Brownie Bradley's garage is now located. Claib E Duval was a partner in the business for ten months after its establishment. When this partnership was disolved, PL Carnell had a store erected on the northeast corner of the square, where the present building is now located. The orginal building occupied some 1400 sq. ft. of space and compared with 12,000 sq ft of store and ware house space which now comprises the Carnell business.
From a small beginning, the Carnell business has grown under the careful management of PL Carnell who has never ceased to be active in business even though ill health has necessitated his cutting down on the heavy load tha he once carried as sole head of the business. A son, Lee Carnell is now active in the business. Besides looking after the numerous branches of the business, he serves as a licensed embalmer in the undertaking business which was established by PL Carnell. Another son, Martin Carnell, was active in the business for a number of years is at present connected with the farm and loan business of Travelers Insurance Company.
