WILLIAM HAUENSTEIN, SR.
William Hauenstein was born February 15, 1822, a native of Rhine, Bavaria. After his school years, he was appointed by the government, district clerk, which office he held as long as a citizen of Germany. He united in marriage in 1845 with Marie Elizabeth Stiegleman. To this union were born nine children, four of whom are living. Mrs. Hauenstein died in the year 1888. In the year 1850 he came to the United States and returned to Germany the same year. Being so well pleased with this country he arranged his affairs to make the United States his home, and in 1853 moved with his family from Germany crossing the Atlantic on a sail vessel
during the stormy season of March, being thirty-six days
on the ocean. After reaching New York, he remained there for two years and then moved to the state of Michigan in 1855 locating in the southeast corner of the state in the county of Monroe, living on a farm until 1863. Having decided to come to a milder climate he came to Missouri landing at St. Louis, thence to Boonville and the same year went into the mercantile business in California, Moniteau County, and in 1865 came to Tuscumbia where he resided until his death,
November 17, 1915, aged 93 years, 9 months, and 2 days.
He became a member of the German Evangelical church
