Bailey was born in Warren County, Missouri, February 22, 1838, left home when he was 14, and traveled widely with many colorful adventures. Remarkably surviving the Oregon Trail, Bailey explored many of the western states, mined for gold in California, freighted in Montana, and fought at the age of sixteen in the Indian Wars with the Oregon Mounted Volunteers. He then traveled by boat via Cape Horn before returning to Warren County, Missouri.
