Benoist, Claude Fouke died March 21, 2008 of Cancer. Wife of Walter F. Benoist, M.D.; mother of Claude Coleman Benoist of Chicago, IL and Sophie Jarrot Benoist of New York; sister of Lucien R. Fouke Jr. and Thomas C. Fouke of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Mrs. Benoist, a real estate agent with Edward L. Bakewell Inc. was a past President of the MICDS Alumni Association, a tireless fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, a member of the Boards of Care and Counseling, the Woman's Exchange and the St. Louis Service Bureau, and a longtime member of the Garden Club of St. Louis. Mrs. Benoist, the daughter of Claude Hodges Fouke and Lucien R. Fouke, was the granddaughter of Phillip B. Fouke, an initial principal of both the Southern Comfort Corporation and the Fouke Fur Company. She was also the granddaughter of John Neal Hodges, Brigadier General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WW I. Mrs. Benoist graduated from the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY and attended Hollins College

Dr. Howard Benoist, who served OLLU as an administrator and professor of English for more than 30 years, died Sunday, April 25, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas.

A native of St. Louis, MO, Dr. Benoist moved to San Antonio in 1968 when he was stationed by the Army at Fort Sam Houston. His service to OLLU began in 1970 when he joined the English faculty. Through the years, Dr. Benoist served the OLLU community as English department chair, vice president for academic affairs, planning officer, provost and executive vice president. Three years ago he returned to full-time teaching in the English Department and had planned to retire after this semester.

During his tenure with OLLU, Dr. Benoist was recognized with the Francine Fleming Award for Teaching Excellence and was an ACE Fellow in Academic Administration and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow.

Dr. Benoist earned his doctoral degree in English with specializations in Renaissance and 18th century literature from the University of Pennsylvania. He also held master's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas at San Antonio. He began undergraduate work at Georgetown University and graduated with honors from Washington University in St. Louis.

An avid traveler, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their summer home in Fish Creek, WI. A devoted grandfather, he treasured the time spent with his 2 grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Claude Benoist.

Dr. Benoist is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia, an OLLU alumna; daughter, Sara and son-in-law Brock Romine; son Ian and daughter-in-law Sue Anne Benoist; grandchildren, Reid Howard Romine and Ryan Wayne Romine; brothers, Dr. Walter Benoist, Peter Benoist and wife Carol, Elliott Benoist and wife Linda; sister, Virginia Freers and husband James; and numerous nieces and nephews.
