Billie Bernice Kirkman Reaves, 89, of Cabool, died Monday September 7, 2015 at the Texas County Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 7, 1926, on a farm near Raymondville, MO the daughter of O.D. Kirkman and Artie Cox Kirkman. Billie married Herschel Reaves on June 2, 1950 and to this union one child, James Donald Reaves was born.
Billie grew up in Cabool, attended Cabool Schools and went on to attend SMS in Springfield for three years. During World War II Billie spent a year in Iowa working alongside her sister Alta. She spent several years working at Producers Creamery in Cabool and worked three years at the City of Cabool. She spent many years as a home maker caring for her family.
Billie was a born again believer in Jesus Christ our Savior and attended the Cabool Christian Church from the age of three until her health prevented her regular attendance. She was a member of Women’s council and served ten years on the bereavement committee. She enjoyed writing and sending cards to shut-ins and sick friends. She was always compassionate about others. If you knew Billie you knew that she was always worrying about someone else before herself.
Billie was the proudest Grandma ever, she loved spending time with her granddaughters, Julia and Jamie and great grandson, Jackson. They were the light of her life.
Billie was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Reaves; her parents and five siblings, Wayne Kirkman, Lee Kirkman, Delmar Kirkman, Alta Reitemeyer and Marie Stroud. Survivors include her son, James Donald and wife, Janice Reaves; two grandchildren, Julia and Jamie Reaves; one great grandchild, Jackson all of Cabool; her brother, Don Kirkman of Gold Canyon, Arizona as well as many nieces and nephews. Herschel Audrey Reaves, 92 of Cabool, MO passed away on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 at the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, MO. He was born on February 21, 1921 near Bado, Missouri, the son of the late Jesse and Lula (Brown) Reaves.
Herschel grew up on the family farm near Bado and attended Gravel Point School and Cabool High School where he graduated in 1939. He served his country during World War II as a Navy Bombardier. After returning home, he was united in marriage to Billie Bernice Kirkman on June 2, 1950 and to this union one son, James Donald was born. They resided in Cabool together for 63 years.
Herschel was a born again believer in Jesus Christ our Savior and attended the Cabool Christian Church where he served many years as a deacon. He was a life time member of the Masonic Grand Lodge. He had a Surge Dealership that he worked for several years. He worked at Fort Leonard Wood as a Refrigeration engineer from 1965 until his retirement in 1985.
Herschel was the proudest grandpa ever and enjoyed every minute he could spend with his granddaughters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing golf until his health slowed him down.
Herschel was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Dillard Reaves, Ernest Reaves, Clarence Reaves, Nova Reaves, Darrel Reaves, Bertha Reaves Smyers, Esther Reaves and Wayne Reaves. He is survived by his wife, Billie Kirkman Reaves of the home; his son, James Donald and wife, Janice; two granddaughters, Julia and Jamie Reaves; one sister, Helen Reaves Laffoon and many nieces and nephews.
