Margaret Elizabeth Unger Whetstine, 94, daughter of John and Lulu Martin Unger, was born Jan. 19, 1911, in Texas County. She died Aug. 2, 2005, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
She grew up in Texas County, moving several times as her father ran a saw mill and threshed grain in the summer.
She graduated from the Cabool Schools and attended college in Springfield, where she majored in piano.
After a six-week courtship, she married Everett M. Whetstine in 1933. They had two sons and added three daughters. The family lived in the Shady Grove (Black Jack) community on a dairy farm, and the Whetstines were owners of Whetstine Oil Co. in Cabool until 1957.
Mrs. Whetstine was saved and baptized at a young age. She taught many Sunday school classes and her ministry included the Women's Missionary Union, camps, Bible school and personal visits. She always carried a small black New Testament in her purse. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Cabool.
Her love of music included playing for many singing groups and church. She sang alto and loved to harmonize.
Mrs. Whetstine was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Nadine Hyde; and brother, Walter Unger.
Surviving are two sons, Joe and Tim Whetstine of Cabool; two daughters, Maxine Foster of Springfield and Roberta Still of Mountain Grove; two sisters, Grace Gabriel of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Dorothy Adkins of Springfield; 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were Aug. 5 at the First Baptist Church in Cabool with the Rev. Dick Wakefield and the Rev. Bill Chambers officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
