Myrtle Louise Burkdoll, 91 of Cabool, Missouri, passed peacefully into eternal life on June 1, 2011 at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri. She was born on August 30, 1919 in Cabool, the daughter of Ed and Molly (Roberts) Johnson. Myrtle was raised in Cabool where she remained the majority of her life. She accepted Jesus as her savior in her youth and her faith never waivered.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her husband, George Burkdoll, and all seven siblings, Leonard Johnson, Dorothy Smith, Mildred Rogers, Jack Johnson, Wayne Johnson and Virginia Box. She was also preceded in death by a host of many relatives who shared the Johnson home.
The most beloved of mothers, she is survived by a son, George W. Burkdoll, Jr. of Springfield and daughter Elizabeth Hayes (John) of St. Louis. Also surviving Myrtle is her only grandchild, Shannen Hayes, the “apple of her eye”, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Myrtle was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool and loved attending her Sunday School class until her health would no longer permit. She was a devoted Christian mother who loved and cherished her family and friends. Her faith, strength and “Johnson” sense of humor saw her through many trials and tribulations and she never lost her zeal for life, even at the age of 91.
For over twenty years, she worked as a nurse’s aid at the Kabul Nursing Home. She had a kindness of spirit that made her an excellent caretaker and then patient. Myrtle also loved quilting, collecting antique dishes, and planting flowers at the home where she lived for over 40 years. Christmas and Easter were special holidays for her because of her spiritual beliefs and she could shop and cook for her loved ones, especially her granddaughter.
Beautiful in spirit, faithful and strong to the end, Myrtle leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be replaced. But “she competed well, finished the race and kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits her . . . “(2 Timothy 4:7-8).
