------------

D.C. Pierce, our friend, citizen and business man, died at his home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the age of 63 years[.] For many days his condition had been growing worse, and early in his disability his case became hopeless. Diabetes, that unconquerable foe of humanity, cut him down and now he is seen among us no more. The funeral will be held at the residence today at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. W.P. Nason, assisted by Dr. Templeton, under charge of the Masonic Fraternity.

Obituary.

DeWitt C. Pierce was born April 2, 1844, in Madison county, Ind. He came with his father's family to Kirksville about 1856, and has lived here ever since till his death, on the evening of the 9th of January 1907. He attended the schools at Kirksville during the fifties. On Dec. 2nd, 1875, he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Hartupe. Of this union one little girl, Aileen, was born but in her fourth year she departed, a sweet flower nipped in the bud. Mr. Pierce joined the C.P. church June 12, 1887, being baptised the same day by Dr. J.B. Mitchell[.] In March 1883 he was elected, ordained and installed as a deacon in the congregation. He was postmaster during Cleveland's second administration. He was elected to the office of circuit clerk and recorder in 1874 and when not filling some public office, he engaged in the grocery business.

Both as a business man and a public officer he was a deservedly popular for he was ever industrious, energetic, and faithful to every trust confided in him. He was ever the same congenial, companionable man. For almost fifty years the writer has know DeWitt C. Pierce; first as a boy of twelve or thirteen years, a student in W.P. Nason's school in 1858, 1859 and from that time on I have known him having lived all these years with him in this town and I have never heard one word spoken against him. He was a good citizen, a true friend, a loving, loyal husband. Brother Pierce leaves a wife, a sister, two brothers and a host of friends to mourn their lost. The funeral services were conducted by the writer assisted by Dr. Templeton and Rev. G.W. Sharp at the home and the burial was in Forest cemetery. The burial was by the Masonic fraternity[.]

"Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep!
From which none ever weep,
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes."
