Funeral services for Sam Farris Hamra, 76, prominent Southeast Missouri businessman, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Steele, Mo., Methodist Church with burial in Mount Zion Cemetery near Steele.
Mr. Hamra, a native of Lebanon, died Wednesday, June 26, 1974, at the Parkway Nursing Home, Fulton, Ky., after a long illness. His daughter lives in the Kentucky town.
He went to Fulton in 1913 and late worked in a relative's dry goods store in Caruthersville, Mo., then was employed by another relative in Tiptonville, Tenn. He moved to Steele in 1919 and opened the Sam Farris Hamra store, which is still in operation.
He established a memorial scholarship for high school graduates of the South Pemiscot High School in Steele to enable graduates to attend college.
His leadership, planning and financial assistance, plus a federal grant, led to the $389,000 Steele Community Center building project scheduled for completion in 1975.
He retired in 1964 and went to Fulton in 1970.
Mr. Hamra is survived by his wife, Mrs. Victoria Homra Hamra, two sons, Gerald F. Hamra, of Steele and Sam Jr., of Springfield, Mo., and two daughters, Mrs. John Homra of Fulton and Miss Marilyn Hamra of Memphis; four sisters, Mrs. George Massad, of Oklahoma City, Mrs. H.J. Hamra, of Bristow, Okla., Mrs. B.H. Hamra, of Caruthersville and Mrs. Annessa Jabbour, of Sao Paulo, Brazil and a brother, Saad Hamra of Beirut, Lebanon.

Victoria Hamra, 95, of Steele, Mo., died Monday, May 26, 2004.
Born Nov. 13, 1908, in Fulton, Ky., daughter of the late Asbir and Adeeba Homra, she was a charter member of the Steele Book Club and a member of the Methodist Church in Steele.
On Feb. 3, 1929, she married Sam Farris Hamra, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jerry Hamra, one brother, Foad Hamra; one sister, Freda Rashid; one grandson, Matthew Hamra and one great-grandson, Trey Hamra.
Survivors include one son, Sam F. Hamra and wife, June, of Springfield, Mo.; three daughters, Joan Hamra and husband, Bill, of Fulton, Marilyn White and husband, Tom, of Memphis, Tenn. and Carolyn Hamra, of Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, Fred Hamra, of Fulton; two sisters, Adeline Hamra, of Dallas, Texas and Lillian Naifeh, of Norman, Okla; grandchildren, Sam F. Hamra III, Karen Groves, Michael Kenneth Hamra, Jacqueline Hamra Mesa, Dee Ann Isaac, William Allen Hamra, Lisa Hamra Sears, Jeri Lynn Joseph, Laura Victoria Hamra, Gerald Ryan Hamra and Christopher Bryan White and ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, at the Steele Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 28, at the Steele Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Hargraves officiating.
Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews, Gerald Ryan Hamra, Sam F. Hamra III, Michael K. Hamra, William Allen Hamra, Christopher Bryan White, Sam T. Hamra, Ron Hamra, Robert Naifeh, Jr. and Jerri Joseph.
The family request contributions be made to the Sam Farris Hamra Community Center, in Steele; Steele Methodist Church; Mt. Zion Cemetery or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in Memphis, Tenn.
John W. German Funeral Home of Steele is in charge of arrangements.
