1st wife of William F. Sholly

Obituary.

Died on the 8th inst, at St. Paul, Minn., whence she had gone for medical treatment[,] Mrs. Julia R. wife of Mr. W.F. Sholly of our city, having been a great sufferer for the past two years or more. She was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs. Packard, and was born in Ottumwa, Io., Feb 12th, 1859. The family moved to Belplain [Belle Plaine], Minn., while Julia was yet quite small. When she was about sixteen years old they moved to Albia, Iowa, where she grew into womanhood and was united in marriage to Mr. Sholly, May 1st, 1879. Their married life was a very happy one and blessed with four children, three of whom, a daughter and two sons, survive the mother.

In her home life as wife and mother she was tender and thoughtful, and did a noble part in promoting the welfare and happiness of her husband and their children. Mrs. Sholly was highly esteemed by all who knew her for her refined and amiable character. She gave her heart to the Lord in her health, and united with the Presbyterian church of their town in her nineteenth year. She was a true and much beloved christian woman and enjoyed the tenderest respect and fellowship of her church and other christian friends. Her membership had been in the church of this place during her residence of twelve years here. It was a great comfort to her in her sore affliction to have the constant, loving presence and ministries of her widowed mother who in sister Shollys death has been bereft of the last of her three children.

The death of a wife and mother so affectionate and self-sacrificing is the greatest of all earth's bereavements, and Mr Sholly and his dear children have the deep sympathy of their many friends. Notwithstanding the oppressive heat of the day, her funeral was largely attended, and the many tear-filled eyes as they looked upon her calm face, told of the grief felt at the loss of so lovely a member of our community. It was so that her sorely stricken mother and Mr. Sholly's parents could be in the service. While earth calls such a death a loss the testimony of heaven is different--the Bible says, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from hence forth, yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." Rev. 14:13
