------------

Death of Mrs. Gooch.

Mrs. Mathilda T. Gooch, formerly a resident of Kirksville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hayden Butler, 912 Spring street, Quincy, Ill., Monday morning, aged 84 years. Her father, Adolphus E. Wood, was originally from New York, where his father was a successful importer and his brother, Fernando Wood, was several times mayor of New York City and served several terms in Congress and U.S. Senate. On a trading trip to Santiago, Cuba, Mr. Wood became infatuated with the climate and city and located there. In 1827, he married a French girl, Caroline Clunette, and continued to reside in Santiago until the insurrection in 1833, a year after the birth of the deceased. From Santiago they came to Shelby county, Mo., and located near Oak Dale where he practiced medicine until shortly before his death in 1856.

Mrs. Gooch was one of ten children, all now dead except two brothers. She was married to Anthony Gooch November 5, 1850, at the Wood home and lived in Shelbyville until 1869, when they located in Kirksville, where they lived until 1895, when they moved to Moulton, Iowa, where Mr. Gooch died a few months later. There were three children, J. Oliver Gooch, who died in 1901, W.O. Gooch, who died in 1887, and Mrs. Hayden A. Butler. After the death of her husband, the deceased returned to Kirksville to live with the Butlers and went with them to Quincy in 1907.

In an earlier day Mrs. Gooch was one of the most prominent women in Kirksville, and at her ever hospitable home it was the delight of the young people to gather. She was one of the world's noble women, and died rich in all that a life of service and self-sacrifice can bestow, and her life will be a perennial benediction in the hearts of those who had some under the influence of her beautiful Christian character.

The body was brought to Kirksville for burial, arriving on the Q.O. & K.C. train Tuesday morning and was taken direct to the cemetery, where Rev. Geo. W. Sharp conducted a short service at the grave.

Five grandchildren of Quincy, Roscoe Butler, Eilleen Butler, W. McAfee Gooch, Beulah B. Gooch and Dena L Gooch, also a nephew, Howard Wood, and Mrs. Harvey Richardson, a friend of the family for many years came to Kirksville for the funeral.
